Description

Italian Viewer, Wood (from 1840)
The aletoscop was used to view photographs in two different ways, with day and night effects.
Through an optical system, the viewer sees a greatly magnified image.

Daytime Image

The side flaps are opened to allow daylight to illuminate the photograph from the front.
It is a fine print on very fine aluminum paper, mounted with other components on a wooden frame with handles.
The housing can be rotated 90 degrees (unfortunately, the bottom part is missing) to allow for viewing portrait-format images.

Nighttime Image:
When the side flaps are closed and the third flap on the back is opened,
a colorful night scene with a completely different atmosphere appears due to the backlighting.
Two hinges on one flap are broken.
Some scratches and slight cracks in the wood.
The mirror is no longer perfectly clean.
